Joseph Newell, MAIBC established the architectural firm of Joe Newell Architect Inc., in Victoria in 2005, following over 15 years of practicing Architecture in Canada and England. Joining Joe, in 2007, is Margaret Newell, MAIBC, who brings another 20 years of experience to the firm.
Our firm provides superior design solutions tailored to the specific needs and aspirations of our Clients. Our process of project delivery engages the Client as the key member of the design team. Our initial discussions are geared towards determining, not only the functional requirements of a new project, but also the vision the Client has for their building. We strongly believe these discussions will direct the design process and inform the evolving architecture in ways that transcend mere architectural style. We also believe that the solution to a Client’s building program ideally includes not only the design of the building but also of the environment in which it is situated. We work closely with planners, landscape architects, civil engineers and community groups to ensure the project is fully integrated into its surroundings.
Sustainable Environmental Design
In our efforts to deliver the best solution possible for our Clients, we embrace the ideas behind sustainable environmental design. Using LEED guidelines, we endeavor to research and incorporate alternative energy solutions, environmentally preferable materials and innovative design wherever possible. We believe that no project is too big or too small to benefit from the ideas of sustainability, and the further we can implement sustainable environmental design, the greater the benefits to owners, users and the community at large.
Our firm is currently made up of principle Joe Newell Architect.AIBC, project architect Margaret Newell Architect.AIBC LEED AP, and architectural technologist, Rob Pringle and Ian Welsh, interior designer, Jordyn Erickson and office administrator, Linda Monette. Prior to the founding of Joe Newell Architect Inc., Joe spent 8 years as Senior Architect with Bas Smith Architect Inc., and the two firms worked in parallel as Bas prepared for retirement. As a result, we were able to draw on the resources of Bas Smith Architect Inc. as required, as well as Bas’ wealth of experience in the delivery of affordable and special needs housing. We can also call upon a select group of Engineers and Consultants, with whom we enjoy an excellent working relationship developed over the course of the last 20 years in the various municipalities on Vancouver Island.
Our goal is to provide superior architectural and environmental design solutions with efficient, functional planning, sound construction practice and attention to detail. Our primary objective is to provide our Clients with first-class service in the delivery of a building which will meet or exceed their hopes and aspirations, and which can become a beneficial influence on the greater community in which it is built.
We are an experienced group of architects with a body of completed work, which ranges from small-scale residential projects to large institutional projects with complex programs and extensive project delivery teams.
Our experience includes the design and delivery of a number of special needs and affordable housing projects, funded by BC Housing, for housing societies in Greater Victoria and in municipalities around the Island. These projects include renovations to existing facilities as well as new developments, and often include amenities to meet a social service mandate within the community. In addition, we were involved in the design and construction of the Access Health Center for the Victoria Cool Aid Society in 2009.
Non-profit client groups with whom Joe Newell Architect Inc. is working, or has worked, include The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, M'Akola Housing Society, Campbell River and District Association for Community Living, Victoria Cool Aid Society, AIDS Vancouver Island, Greater Victoria Housing Society, Parksville Lions Housing Society, The Gorge View Society and L'Arche Comox Valley.
